Originating in ancient China over 3000 years ago, Traditional Acupuncture is based on natural laws which describe the flow of energy in nature and in the body. This life energy, called Chi, courses through meridians or pathways within the body, much like rivers course over the earth. When the Chi is balanced and moving smoothly, we experience well-being in body/mind/spirit; health is promoted. When the Chi is not full and flowing, symptoms of pain dysfunction and disease warn us that there is a problem that needs attention. If the real problem is not addressed, eventually more serious symptoms and conditions will occur. Traditional Acupuncture treats the deeper underlying imbalance rather than simply removing the symptoms.
What About Needles?
Acupuncture needles are solid, and extremely fine-barely beyond the thickness of a human hair. The finest quality stainless steel, prepackaged, sterilized, and disposable needles are used. Most insertions are made just below the skin's surface. The experience of sensation varies from person to person. Sometimes one will feel nothing at all. Other times, another one, may feel a dull, momentary ache or tingling sensation when the needle contacts the energy. Generally only a few needles (two to six) are used in a treatment. Sometimes a nurturing herb called moxa may be used in treatments.
